Print Servers buying guide

Print servers put printers on the network on their own terms: external print server boxes that give a USB or parallel printer an Ethernet or wireless presence, internal cards for printers with a server slot, and wireless print servers that free a printer from the nearest jack. Where a capable printer lacks the right network interface, the print server is cheaper than replacing the machine.

Match three things: the printer's port (USB or parallel, and connector type), the network (wired or wireless, and the security standard the wireless network actually enforces), and the printing protocols the organization's systems expect. Internal cards are printer-family-specific; order them by the printer's exact model. For older printers being kept in service deliberately - wide-format, label, or specialty machines - the print server is often what makes the keep-it decision practical. COLAMCO supplies print servers and printer connectivity for business, government, and education fleets that mix printer generations.
